Chapter Summary for 12th English The Tiger King Kalki

The story “The Tiger King” by Kalki is a satire on the conceit of those in power, narrated with dramatic irony. The protagonist, Maharaja of Pratibandapuram, known as the Tiger King, was predicted at birth to be killed by a tiger. This prophecy leads him to kill 99 tigers, believing that if he could kill 100 tigers, he would defy his fate.

The story humorously describes the King’s obsession with hunting tigers, his extreme measures to ensure no one else hunts them, and the lengths he goes to in order to find and kill tigers when they become scarce in his kingdom.

The climax of the story comes when he believes he has successfully killed the 100th tiger, which ironically was not killed by his bullet but fainted from shock. His subjects, fearful of the King, kill the tiger themselves and hide the truth. The King, believing he is safe from the prophecy, later dies from an infection caused by a sliver from a wooden tiger toy, thus fulfilling the prophecy in an unexpected way.

The story highlights the absurdity of human arrogance and the ultimate power of fate, using humor and irony to deliver its message.
